What To Do After Water Damage

Immediate steps after water gets into your home: safety, source control, documentation, drying, and when to call for help.

Start with safety

Do not walk into standing water if electricity may be affected. Avoid contaminated water and keep children and pets away from wet areas.

Stop the source if you can

Shut off the water supply for plumbing leaks, check the sump pump, or move items away from the wet area if it is safe to do so.

Document before cleanup

Take wide photos, close-up photos, and short videos before moving materials. Keep receipts for emergency supplies or temporary repairs.

Call before hidden moisture spreads

Water can move behind baseboards, into wall cavities, under flooring, and through ceiling assemblies. Ask a provider about moisture checks and drying equipment.

When to call for local help

If water is still spreading, porous materials are wet, odors are developing, or you need documentation for insurance, it is worth talking the situation through with a restoration provider. Ask what they can inspect, how they document moisture, what work is included, and how pricing is handled before work begins.
